This workshop will take place on the beautiful grounds of Morven Museum. We’ll begin the first day with a demo and discussion of equipment and methods for painting on location. In the afternoon we will focus on composition and completing a few small sketches of scenes on the property. Sketching is a great way to become familiar with the scene which you will use as a basis for a painting. On the second day I will work with each person individually to help you select the appropriate palette, transfer your sketches to your canvas, and complete your painting. We will end the day with a critique and suggestions for further development of the paintings.
This workshop is open to both oil and gouache painters. Please indicate which medium you will be working in.
MATERIALS
You will need to bring a portable easel for plein air painting.
I recommend purchasing supplies from Jerry’s Artarama in Lawrenceville as the staff is knowledgeable and can recommend alternates if needed. This workshop is open to both oil and gouache painters. Supplies are listed separately below.
Supplies for Oil Painters
Oil Paints:
1 large tube (150 ml) of Titanium white
1 small tube each (37 ml) of the following colors:
Hansa Yellow Medium (cool) – can use Cadmium Lemon
Cadmium Yellow Medium (warm)
Quinacridone Red (cool)
Cadmium Red Medium (warm)
Cerulean Blue (cool) – can use Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue (warm)
Burnt Sienna
Brushes:
Hog Bristle Brushes: I mostly use Flat Brushes – numbers 4, 5 and 6 and a large one (10) for toning the canvas. A few filbert and bright brushes are also useful. A large synthetic bush can also be helpful for areas where you want soft edges such as skies.
Small container of odorless thinner/spirits (Gamsol or Turpenoid)
Small air-tight brush washer with lid
Painting surfaces:
Small canvas panels are best. I recommend 6x8, 8x10, and 9x12. You will need wet panel carrier or you can use a pizza box.
Miscellaneous:
viewfinder (I will bring a few of these if you don’t have one. I make them myself)
disposable gloves
palette knife for mixing paint (teardrop shape)
rags or paper towels (I prefer rags)
Paints: I recommend Winsor Newton Designer Gouache tubes
37ml Permanent White
14ml:
Primary Yellow
Burnt Sienna
Cadmium Red
Alizarin Crimson
Ultramarine Blue
Cerulean Blue
Ivory Black (optional)
Brushes: Short handled Watercolor Brushes. I like Princeton or Silver Silk Brands
½ inch flat
Size 4 Chisel Blender
Size 5 Round
Optional:
¾ inch flat
½ inch White Goat Mop Oval
Small Spritz Bottle
Soft Pencil and Kneaded Eraser
Disposable palette paper (9 x 12)
Watercolor Paper – I prefer using a Cold Press Watercolor Block (9x12). Fabriano and Arches are both good brands.
Masking tape
Collapsible Water Container
Viewfinder
About the instructor: I love being outside observing light, colors, and movement so I choose to paint plein-air. Being in the environment inspires me to create unique compositions that reflect what I consider special about the location.
I discovered my passion for art when I took a drawing class in college. I was hooked. My determination and obsession with art has led me to study with many artists whose work I admire, as well as to take classes at art schools such as The Art Students League of New York and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. I am grateful to be on this journey that always brings me joy and that changes me and my art in ways that I cannot anticipate.
