Description
Drypoint Intaglio Crash Course: Explore repeatable printmaking at its easiest, most accessible form. This workshop will teach you these ins and outs of intaglio printmaking—a centuries-old technique for translating drawings and marks into a repeatable edition of prints. Using simple skills, artists will have the opportunity to discover the ease of quick and easy intaglio printing. Along the way, artists may learn about basic viscosity printing, chine colle and exploratory inking techniques. An ideal workshop for beginners; no experience necessary!
A material fee of $25 includes two 5x7” plates, image-making tools, printing papers, and access to inks, colle technique papers, and a sundry of tools and materials for use during the workshop.
A note from the instructor:  Hello Artists, this workshop will cover a variety of basic intaglio techniques and printing possibilities. I expect the session to be largely focused on demonstration, with ample time to print individually. This is a beginner’s workshop; you should expect both a fair amount of instruction and making during our time together.
To have the most success in the workshop, the Arts Council and I will provide the bulk of what you will need, for which you are asked to pay a $25 material fee directly to the instructor on the day of the workshop. This fee will include ample printmaking paper, inks and modifiers, plates, access to a wide variety of tools and one-time use materials, and a plethora of other items during the session.
You are asked to provide a few small things yourself, as well: A notebook or sketchbook in which to take notes on techniques, tips and troubleshooting; pen/pencil An apron or smock, as we will be using oil-based inks which will stain clothing A 9x12" pad of newsprint to transport your work home from class Vinyl and Rubber-lined Cotton gloves will also be provided—if you have a vinyl allergy, or prefer to wear different gloves, please provide them.
In addition to this list, you might also wish to provide some resource images to work with. The intaglio process we’ll be exploring in this workshop is ideal for translating drawings, photographs and other representational imagery into a printmaking process. While we won’t be working to make exact replicas of your source image, we will use the image to help us see values (areas of black, white and mid-tones), textures and marks. I would suggest supplying resource images —to serve as inspiration— that are based on drawings and photographs that have a wide range of values. (A quick Google image search of “drypoint intaglio print” will yield a lot of photo- and drawing-based prints that might help you consider your source images.) We will be working on 5x7” plates; your resource images should be sized accordingly and either printed out or provided in a non-digital format. Resource images are not a requirement; I will be demonstrating a variety of inking techniques and image-making practices that can be more spur-of-the-moment, if that feels more beneficial for your working style.
