Description

Study watercolor landscape composition in this 10 week class. Participants will study a variety of painting styles - from realistic to impressionist, and paint a variety of outdoor scenes, from green and lush vistas, to gritty urban landscapes, using weekly prompts.

This class will be conducted over Zoom.

Watercolor Materials List:

Drawing paper - 9” x 12” or a similar size

Pencils - 2H, HB, 2B, 3B, mechanical or wood - your preference

Colored pencils - optional

Pencil sharpener

Kneaded Eraser

Brushes - a range, but small round #2 or #4 are good for detail work and flat 2" brushes are great for large washes.

Block of watercolor paper - hot or cold pressed - your preference

Container for water

Optional for painting in class: watercolor palette with wells to place fresh paint

Watercolor suggestions: (from tubes) 1 - Aureolin Yellow (a cool yellow) 2 - New Gamboge (a warm yellow) 3 - Quinacridone Gold or Raw Sienna (an earth color) 4 - Quinacridone Burnt Orange or Burnt Sienna (an earth color) 5 - Permanent Red (or Winsor Red, or Cadmium Red) -- (a warm red) 6 - Quinacridone Rose or Permanent Rose (a cool red) 7 - Alizarin Crimson (a cool red) 8 - French Ultramarine (warm blue) 9 - Phthalo Blue or Winsor Blue 10 - Cobalt Blue (true blue) 11 - Sap Green 12 - Viridian 13 - Burnt Umber 14 - White gouache - (opaque white for detail work)

Instructor
Barbara DiLorenzo is a children’s book author and illustrator. Her first picture book was Renato and the Lion, which received a starred review from Booklist and was named a Bank Street Best Book of the Year, a Junior Library Guild selection, and a CBC Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People. She is also the author and illustrator of Quincy: The Chameleon Who Couldn’t Blend In, a finalist for the Crystal Kite Award. Her forthcoming book, One Thursday Afternoon, aims to help children use nature, art, and companionship to cope with anxiety. Barbara graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and studied under Mary Beth McKenzie at the Art Students League in New York. She is a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society as well as the co-president of the Children's Book Illustrators Group of New York. Barbara loves teaching and aims to bring out the unique voice in all artists. To see more of her work, please visit www.barbaradilorenzo.com.
