Students will study painting and sculpture through discovering the fascinating art world of impressionist painting, a ground-breaking movement in the late 19th century. They will study such masters as Monet, van Gogh, Renoir, and Degas among others, observing the brush strokes, textures, use of color, emphasis on effects of light, subject matter, and more that this movement is known for. Students will explore tonal shading using pencils, charcoal and watercolors, combining these mediums to discover how each artist worked. They will learn how to paint impressionistically and create their own paintings on canvas inspired by this art period. Proper care of supplies will be emphasized. Projects will include plein air landscape, still life, and self portraiture, with an emphasis on the alla prima method (completing a painting in one session). No camp on Monday July 5.
