Patternmaking: Make Your Own Skirts & Tops

Patternmaking: Make Your Own Skirts & Tops
Have a sewing machine phobia? Come and conquer your fears at the Arts Council of Princeton and discover the joy of sewing. You will be changing thread, reloading a bobbin and sewing with an array of stitches in no time at all!
In this class, learn sewing skills on the sewing machine while also learning to make basic garments such as pajama pants and bags. Learn to recycle old clothing items into new creations: toys, pillows, zipper bags and grocery tote bags and more! The possibilities are endless! Let your imagination and creativity be your guide after you finally become close friends with your sewing machine. Both your closet and your wallet will thank you!
Students are responsible for their own materials. Please bring fabric scissors, thread, fabric, tape measure, needles, and straight pins to every class. Carolina will be available to answer additional questions on materials at the first class. This class is cross listed with the Princeton Adult School, but will be located at the Arts Council.
About the Instructor: Carolina Firbas is a native of Peru and moved to the United States over 20 years ago. She has a BA in Early Childhood Education from Universidad Catolica del Peru. She first got involved with the ACP when she moved to Princeton 15 years ago looking for classes for her two kids. Carolina has been a local vendor in ACP’s Sauce for the Goose holiday craft sale with her Fine Knits collection, and has also served as a volunteer in many different children events. She grew up in a family of knitters and seamstresses and learned the skill from her grandmothers, aunts, and her mother as well as fashion magazines, patterns, and sewing projects as a child.
Take your sewing skills to the next level with this introduction to pattern making.  Combining those skills with well informed fabric choices will lead you to developing a wardrobe that is YOU!  We will explore how to design a simple skirt and top pattern, create your own production pattern pieces and the value of muslim mockups.
Bring a notebook, tape measure and calculator to the first class.
Skip Date: Wednesday April 8
Materials: Fabric and other materials will be discussed at the first class and then students will have the opportunity to purchase their own fabric before the 2nd class. Students are responsible for their own materials. This class is cross listed with the Princeton Adult School, but will be located at the Arts Council.
About the Instructor: Kathleen Gittleman, former owner of Pins and Needles, has been sewing clothing since her first semi-successful hot pink sleeveless shift in middle school.  Frustration with not being able to find the patterns she wanted led to experimenting with pattern making which she's excited to share with you!
