Painting with Cold Wax Medium [Online]

Cold Wax Medium is an exciting way to approach any style of painting, whether it's traditional landscape, still life, portrait, or pure abstraction. We will explore this exciting, versatile medium with many techniques you can utilize in your current painting process. You will learn the fundamentals of working with cold wax medium and oil paint, as the weeks progress, we will build upon them and move on to more advanced techniques.

Oil Painting with Cold Wax Medium Required Supplies:

▪ Cold Wax Medium 16-32 ounces (Gamblin or Dorland)

▪ Odorless Mineral Spirits 16-32oz (Gamsol or Weber)

▪ 12 Sheets Arches Oil Paper, 9x12 inches

▪ 4” soft brayer or similar ▪ palette knives (1 or 2) with offset handle

▪ At least 1 Silicone Squeegee, 6”

▪ Tooth picks for making designs into coldwax

▪ Oil paint/pigment sticks (2 or 3) R&F pigment sticks

▪ Oil paints - basic limited palette might include: Titanium white Ultramarine blue Transparent orange Transparent red Sap green Cadmium yellow Cadmium red Cadmium orange Ivory black Earth colors

▪ A roll of paper towels or rags to wipe down tools

▪ Disposable palette paper or coated freezer paper

▪ Nitrite Gloves

▪ Tissue paper, newsprint, parchment paper

▪ A roll of wax paper

▪ For clean-up many people use odorless mineral spirits or for solvent-free cleaning, baby oil, and or vegetable oil work fine

Suggested Supplies: • 2 to 3 inexpensive dry pigments Opt • Stabilo Woody 3-in-1 Pencil, Black (1) • Materials/tools you can use to create texture in wet paint surfaces

Fran Eber is an interdisciplinary artist working in mixed media. Her current work focuses on oil painting with cold wax medium and, she has spent the last few years intensively researching various techniques using this medium across many painting styles. Ms. Eber received her BFA in Visual Arts at Rutgers’ Mason Gross School of the Arts, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. Her artist book “Elegy” is in the permanent collection at Rutgers University Library. Ms. Eber has 25 years of art and design experience running her agency as a creative director and designer. Many of her commissioned works are in permanent collections.
